| I'd like to invite you and your readers to a bicycling-related book event we are having at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum this coming Saturday night, June 14th. Local author Jim Malusa bicycled alone to the lowest points in Australia, Asia, Europe, South America, Africa, and North America. His funny and interesting adventures reaching these "anti-summits" are recounted in his new book *Into Thick Air: Biking to the Bellybutton of Six Continents," which just has been released by Sierra Club Books. Jim will be reading at 7pm and 8pm in the Desert Museum's Warren Oasis Theater. Adult Admission to the Desert Museum's "Summer Saturday Nights" is $6.00 after 5pm (for Kids 6-12 it's $2.25; under 5 is free). Between 6:00pm and 9:00pm there will be family games and activities related to geography and biking in Desert Garden. The museum grounds will remain open until 10pm. Summer Saturday Nights always are a really great way to enjoy an evening in the desert and Jim's readings this coming weekend will be icing on the cake, especially for Tucson bicyclists! Please see the attached flyer for more details, and please consider posting this event on your site if you think it's appropriate... Thank You, Debra Hills ASDM Gift Shops Book Buyer //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Please Help Me Help Those I am new to cycling having bought my first road bike a couple months ago. I am starting to train for a 4,000 mile trip from Seattle, WA to Washington D.C. to raise funds and awareness on behalf of people with disabilities. The trip is 71 days this coming summer from June 7th through August 16th. The trip is called the Journey of Hope, put on my Push America, a non profit dedicated to helping those with disabilities. I am trying to fundraise $5,500 for the charity to support their cause and mission. I was wondering if you could help me get the news out to fellow cyclists here in Tucson via emails, or through your website to help me fundraise for this amazing venture. I have many reasons for taking on this challenge. A small part is a personal challenge to see if I can make it. Secondly, I am doing it in dedication to my mother who is battling cervical and uterine cancer. Also, I am riding for my friend Seth O'Brien, a local DJ, who lost his foot to cancer last year. A little about me: My name is Karl Heideman, and am a non graduating senior at the U of A. I am majoring in Photography and work with the Athletic Department as a student athletic trainer. I am a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and proud to be breaking down the stereotypes generally associated with them. Below is some basic information: When: June 11-August 16 (71 days) Where: Seattle to Washington DC Distance: approx 4,000 miles Lodging: mostly high school gym floors Meals: donated by local communities and organizations where we stop 2007 Team: 90 college fraternity men from universities across the country fundraised over $525,000 in the 20th year of the Journey of Hope. My Team: Consists of 20 cyclists and 5 support van crew members. (The other two teams leave from San Francisco. A basic day consists of waking up at around 5:00 am (Sunrise dependent) and riding an average of 75 miles. Upon arrival we are met by news crews and reporters, followed by showers at the local high school gym. We then go to interact with the people we are fundraising for during dinner or other activity. That is usually followed by a grant given to the organization that helps people with disabilities. Please visit my website for more information, documentary videos, and a map. Donations can be made online by credit card or checks can be made to Push America and mailed to me. Attached is even more information about the trip. Thank you very much for your support. Sorry about the long e-mail, I am just very excited about the trip and love to share and talk about it with anyone when I get the chance. Together we can make a difference! William, now 10 years old, last complained of a sore throat and other flu like symptoms three weeks ago, and with in 24 hours fell into his current state. He is now being treated at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Craig's wife, Sylvia, quit her job to monitor William and take care of their daughter while Craig continues to work full time. Those of you unfamiliar with Craig, he is currently a cat 3 on our road team and also races masters 40+. My wife and I went through a similar situation with our first daughter back in 1999. Only with immense support from family, friends and co-workers have we been able to survive. However the road as been difficult and it breaks my heart to hear of William's situation. As you can imagine William's prognosis is unknown. Being in his current condition for three weeks doesn't necessarily mean he will not fully recover, however, his road will undoubtedly be very difficult and full of long, steep climbs. I fear the road for Craig's family will be quite rough during the months and years ahead. That is why I am asking for donations to go to Craig's family to ease some of the burden they will inevitably encounter . Listed below are some ways for you to contribute to Craig and his family: Option 1: Send donations to the Swiss American Bike Shop. Checks made to Craig Hamilton at: Craig Hamilton c/o Swiss American Bikes 16835 North Park Pl. #3 Glendale, AZ 85306 Option 2: Donate directly to Miguel Garcia or Janine Carrao, Saturday May 17th, in Flagstaff at the MBAA mountain bike finals. Both Miguel and Janine are Swiss members. Option 3: Donate directly to me, Sunday morning May 25th during this months Silent South Mountain Sunday! 5:30am to 11:00am. I will be set up under the Swiss American EZ up on the corner of Mineral and Central (last road before you enter South Mountain Preserve). I can not collect donations on preserve property so, I'll have to risk it on the street corner. Option 4: Profit from the Charles Schwab Dash For Cash/Swiss Crit will be donated to Craig and his family. Please check out our race coming up this June and support Craig by racing your bike! More information can be found on the Swiss website: www.swissamericanracing.org Thanks for reading. Please help to spread the word. If you are unable to contribute, a short prayer for William would be appreciated as well! Support House Congressional Resolution The House Congressional Resolution on Bicycling (H.Con.Res. 305), introduced in February, calls on the United States Congress to adopt a national bicycling strategy to fully realize the incredible benefits of getting more people bicycling, more safely, more often. There is a "sense of Congress" that complete streets policies are essential to ensure wise use of considerable Federal investment in transportation infrastructure, and that expanded funding for bicycling and walking programs is desirable and appropriate. As we celebrate National Bike Month in May, cities and organizations throughout the country will be hosting events promoting bicycling as a healthy, fun, and viable form of transportation. This is also a perfect opportunity to contact your Congressional Representatives to thank those that have signed onto the Resolution and urge those that have not to so. A good showing for the Resolution is essential as this would serve as the first ever comprehensive bicycling policy statement and would serve as an important policy statement guide for the next transportation reauthorization which begins next year (2009). As part of National Bike Month please take a moment to Contact your Congressional Member to urge them to support HCONRES305. Thank you. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// The Injured list ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Hey gang, 04/18/08 Here's the good news: my first broken bone was NOT caused by a cycling accident, but the bad news is that I have a broken bone! I broke my left wrist this morning by slipping on a rock at Seven Falls. I am not in too much pain right now, but am a bit overwhelmed about living w/ one arm for the next 4-8 weeks, esp. as this means that I am definitely out for TTM and am iffy for riding Tahoe. :( I go to the doc sometime this week to get my cast and will know more at that time. I will keep all of you updated on my status when I hear more. Your favorite one-armed friend, Barb Dolan (Coach for Team i |
